Known as the Beef Capital of Australia, Rockhampton is an historically significant city with an abundance of activities. Rockhampton lies in the Capricorn Region, which is the perfect stopover for those travelling between Fraser Island and the Whitsundays Islands. In the Capricorn region, you can experience both Queensland’s Outback and the Great Barrier Reef.

Mount Etna Caves National Park

Mount Etna Caves are home to some of the most cavernous limestone formations in all of Australia. It is truly a sight to explore. The tracks are open to the public to go on a self guided walk. However, the true spectacle is during bat breeding season. There are guided tours at this time to see the incredible nightly event of 100,000 bats. Nearly 80% of Australia’s bent-wing bats use one cave for their breeding. This incredible sight is an exciting way to spend a night!

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens and Zoo

Widely regarded as Regional Australia’s best, Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is the perfect way to spend a tropical afternoon. There are many unique areas that make the gardens such an incredible place from the Japanese Gardens, to the Cenotaph to the Murray Lagoon. While at the gardens experiencing Australia’s spectacular plant life, you might as well stop by the zoo. The zoo is open every day and there’s feeding times later in the afternoon. Best of all, the zoo is free!

Great Keppel Island

East from Rockhampton is Yeppoon, known for its beaches and tropical climate. Just offshore from Yeppoon is Great Keppel Island. Part of the Great Barrier Reef, this island is surrounded by tropical beaches and vast coral reefs. Head over to see the Keppel islands on the daily departing ferries. There are many different tours and attractions to experience while spending your time in the beautiful Keppel island region.
